Hell is a former warp and used to be an area of unnatural landscape - landscape that had been manually converted into unnatural materials. Grass had been replaced with gravel, trees and their leaves smoothstone and cobble respectively, and a pond had been replaced with a small lava lake. This area considerably pre-dated any concept of the Nether, but the idea of a hell dimension in minecraft dates even further back again, with gravel and lava featuring prominently. The petrified trees were intended to make it clear that this is an area of formerly natural landscape.

As Freedonia grew, and travel became slower, real-estate near warps became more and more valuable. As a result, a small settlement has built up around this region for no reason other than its former warp status.

The area has since been reverted to a natural appearance for reasons unknown.
